Eight months after the Warhammer incident

On the coast of California, a building of smooth whitewashed walls and terracotta slated roofs was perched elegantly. Clear green-blue water glistened in the sunlight, lapping up at the beach at the foot of the cliff the building stood upon. The walls were bright, almost blindingly so, but also clean. As was the reddish-pink tiling that surrounded the perfect, rectangular pool. Cushioned, wooden sunbeds and parasols were placed at strategic intervals, often beside a potted cactus or fern. Each and every item of decoration was in mint condition, be it the quality varnished timber or even the lack of tiny clumps of soil marking the plant pots. The entire resort was as spectacular and pristine; possibly a resort worthy of the title of paradise.

Every bed but one was empty of people or their belongings: a white towel sat folded on the edge of a bed close to the balcony overlooking the sea. A small gym-bag could be seen beside it on the floor, closed and playing host to a pair of black leather shoes that rested happily atop the main storage compartment. In each shoe, a single black sock. A middle-aged man stood out on the balcony in nothing but a pair of swim-shorts; for a man considered relatively old, his figure was decent enough to pass as "trim". Captain Noel Verigan looked down at his own stomach, where several hairs curled and matted to form his ugly, animalistic chest hair. He thought of himself in disgust for not keeping himself shaved. Being stuck inside an interdimension slipspace life support field for seven months was all well and good, since he hadn't aged or grown a single bit. The politics that followed, however, was a living, time consuming hell, with no room for luxuries. He had been made to explain the entire mission.

The individuals who had gone to the brutal universe through the portal had become stuck in a macroscopic battle whilst the portal weakened. The Captain, who had been laying in reserve for such a mission after his unexpected arrival shortly after the others left, was quickly rushed to his ship, where he used a modified hyperdrive to jump through the smaller portal. Everyone had been saved during the mission, but with one major drawback: some of the cryo-pods 'malfunctioned', with the irritating intent to revive each member to a hundred-percent functionality rate. In layman's terms, most of the aliens, wounded and "odd" figures had been deemed unfit to leave the pods. Engineers and techs of both this world and the ship had been fixed on the stasis rooms.

Although fixed would be a completely unintentional negative pun.

Verigan sipped his margarita, leant againt the railing and looking out at the sea. In the distance, a fragile-looking yacht bobbed. It had been a long while since he had been on a Wet Navy vessel. For a short while he had been stationed on a small frigate, as a Navigations Officer. The calming waves of the sea soothed him rather than sickened him, much like the effect of his drink.

"Sir?"

Behind the Captain stood two men in black CIRAS vests and ACHs. They hefted MP5 9mm SMGs that were pointed to the ground. He turned around, taking notice of the way they recognised his unofficial ranks. That, or they had taken to a polite formality with the addition of such a title.

"Yes?"

~X~

"Excuse me, young lady? Would you mind rounding up the occupants of the first floor and asking them to meet me here, as per Verigan's request?"

"Of course, sir."

"Thank you." he smiled, nodding to her as she left the room to knock on doors.

Now, Noel was dressed back in his fatigues, shoes and socks on, cap under his arm. He looked around what was the conference room in what used to be a spa. It was now a makeshift base of operations for the rag-tag group of "specialists", requested by the Captain after seeing the place advertised on their internet system. A corny way of choosing areas, but the place had seemed fortifiable and relaxing. The resort was also less than a kilometre from a private airstrip, which was where the Catalyst was docked.

Coincidence?

Highly doubtful.

Okay. So I've tried to instate a little bit of order into crossroads. Same chars (minus this new char of mine Razz). Enjoy!

The doorknob turned gently as the door was opened. Andrew stepped inside the conference room/spa, nodding at the Captain as he stepped inside, closing the door behind him.

"Captain." The man said with respect. The Lone Wanderer glanced at the man's fatigues, fighting the urge to frown. Andrew had worn his T-51b, minus the helmet. It was a lot less formal than that of Verigan.

Sure, over the months he'd kept better care of it than in the Wasteland. Replaced broken parts, refitted the climate system, polished the armor. Instead of an old, scratched white surface, it was now practically shining.

But the bulky armor clearly wasn't meant for a meeting.

"I apologize, I didn't think..." He started, then trailed off. He knew it probably wouldn't matter anyways. He stepped towards the table, looking up.

"You called me here?"

Eight months.

It'd been eight months since the battle at Kislev. Nearly a year since he'd left his universe. By now, he was somewhat used to the feeling of comfort such a normal world brought.

But he knew he'd never be the same. He'd lost count of the nights he'd woken up in a cold sweat. His dreams were full of sand and snow, gunpowder and blood.

Still, it was a relief to not have to fight for your food. No matter how much he tried to help people in the Wasteland, it always boiled down to his survival over the others. He was- had been willing to kill people over a simple box of junk food. He'd done it, too.

Now his meals were delivered to him, no one tried to shoot at him when he walked down a street. There were no nights that he couldn't sleep because the pain of starvation kept him awake.

The type of lifestyle he was now living would make him soft, he knew it.

An armoured man walked into the room, heavy footsteps thudding against the warm red carpet. It was either an approaching goliath with a strangely large appetite, or a well built or armoured individual. They spoke in a familiar tone of voice.

"Captain."

Verigan span on his heel, a glass of shandy in hand. Before he could swallow a sip of the drink, however, Andrew spoke up.

"I apologize, I didn't think..."

With his free hand, the Captain casually waved his hand at the feeble and unnecessary apology.

"You called me here?"

"That I did." nodded Verigan in reply, drinking a little more of the shandy. "Did you see anyone else on their way down here?"

Andrews shook his head in reply to Verigan. He hadn't seen anyone else coming, no. But he hadn't looked, truth be told. He'd started to avoid the other people from Kislev following their return. He was avoiding everyone, actually. He was out of his element.

Radiation and mutants, sure. Being social with people that wasn't as paranoid as him after living in the Wasteland? Not so much.

"No, Captain. I didn't see anyone else. But don't take my word for it. Now, what did you wish to discuss?"

Cautiously, Noel turned his head to a pair of staff cleaning glasses behind the empty bar, and then to the two soldiers who had requested him to participate in a short conference call. One nodded and the soldiers politely escorted to the two women out of the room. They closed the double doors to the bar-lounge behind them, presumably standing either side of it, to stay way any unwanted ears. Once the room was clear, the Captain spoke up.

"There's been a massive energy reading in the middle of a country called Russia. I can't say I know much of the planet myself, but I do know that we need to board a shuttle and get there before, what we think could be new arrivals, cause any trouble," he explained, briefly. "When the one in robes and the--- (Work In Progress Post)
